When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

Fun Home premiered at The Public Theater in New York City on October 22, 2013, under the direction of Sam Gold. The show premiered on Broadway at Circle in the Square Theatre on April 19, 2015. Directed by Gold, the Broadway production featured Michael Cerveris, Judy Kuhn, Sydney Lucas, Beth Malone and Emily Skeggs.

Meet Our Cast

Adult Alison by Elyssa Bickford
Lesbian cartoonist. Having become a writer, Alison is our grounded narrator as she reflects on her life and her relationship with her father.

Medium Alison by Laura Breyen
An intelligent but awkward college freshman at Oberlin College. Leaving home for the first time, she discovers that she is a lesbian and meets her first girlfriend.

Small Alison by Maia Kelly
A strong-willed and opinionated child on a journey to discover herself and her relationship with traditional femininity.

Christian by Reid Soltis
Alison’s older brother, though he only appears in the show as a child.

John by Wren Watland
Alison’s younger brother, though he only appears in the show as a child.

Bruce by Christian LaBissoniere
Alison’s father. High-school English teacher by day, funeral home director by night, and an antique collector by weekend. As a closeted gay man, Bruce’s repressed anger often comes to the surface and is at odds with his care for his children.

Helen by Margaret Reid
Alison’s mother. Quietly frustrated by her marriage, Helen turns to music as an outlet. Helen tries to hold the family together, willfully ignoring her husband’s unfaithful acts.

Joan by Erebi Nyenkan
Alison’s first girlfriend. An out and proud lesbian student at Oberlin who helps Medium Alison explore her sexuality and navigate her freshman year. She is blunt, sarcastic, and dry.

Roy/Mark/Pete/Bobby Jeremy by Casper Gessell
Roy is a young man Bruce hires to do yard work. Mark is a high school junior. Pete is a mourner visiting the Bechdel funeral home. Bobby Jeremy is the lead singer on a television show in Alison’s imagination.

How to Dance in Ohio is a joyful and uplifting new musical exploring the universal need to connect and the courage it takes to step out into the world. With music by Jacob Yandura, lyrics and book by Rebekah Greer Melocik, the musical was adapted from the award-winning 2015 HBO documentary film by Alexandra Shiva.

Based on a true story, this feel-good show follows a group of Autistic young adults and their families navigating change and preparing for a spring formal dance—a rite of passage that breaks open their daily routines in Columbus, Ohio.

How to Dance in Ohio made its world premiere at Syracuse Stage in September 2022 and later the show transferred to Broadway in November 2023. The show received a host of critical acclaim, with The How to Dance in Ohio Authentic Autistic Representation Team winning a 2024 Drama Desk Special Award.
